David Backstein, MD, MED, FRCSC is a board certified, fellowship trained specialist in orthopedic surgery with a focus on complex knee reconstruction. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Toronto, Canada in 1993. He was mentored by Dr. Allan Gross, who performed Canada’s first osteochondral allograft knee transplant. He currently is the Arthroplasty lead at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Naples, Florida, USA. His previous appointments included Associate Professor at the University of Toronto, the head of Granovsky Gluskin Division of Orthopaedics at Mount Sinai Hospital, and the medical lead and chair at the Mount Sinai Centre for Musculoskeletal Disease.
As a thought leader, Dr. Backstein serves on the editorial boards of several distinguished peer reviewed journals including the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Orthopedics International, Clinical Orthopedics & Related Research and Journal of Arthroplasty. He is also member of several prestigious societies including the American Association of Hip & Knee Surgeons, American Knee Society and American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons. He was a panel member of the Knee Society Score Radiographic Scoring System Committee and The Joint Replacement Infection Management Consensus. He has served on the design team of multiple revision medial pivot products and is frequently invited as a guest lecturer by companies like Zimmer and Stryker.
Dr. Backstein has around 200 publications in peer-reviewed journals and contributed 20 book chapters with close to 6000 citations and a h-index of 43. His publications are based on primary, complex primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty. He has also written editorials for Clinical Orthopedics & Related Research, Knee Society Proceedings and Journal of Orthopedic Research.
