Dr. Vasarhelyi completed his Honours BSc in Kinesiology and MSc (Psychomotor Behaviour) at the University of Waterloo, both in 2001. He graduated from medical school at Queen’s University in 2005 and completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Queen’s in 2010, followed by a fellowship in Orthopaedic Trauma and Post-Traumatic Reconstruction in 2011. He completed a fellowship in Adult Hip and Knee Reconstruction at the University of Western Ontario in 2012 and was appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Western Ontario in 2012, following the completion of his fellowship.
Dr. Vasarhelyi is currently appointed as an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery, in the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at Western University. He is the Head of the Arthroplasty Unit at University Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre and is a Researcher at the Bone and Joint Institute at Western. In addition to his work at Western, he is a board member of Operation Walk Canada and works on medical missions with the organization. Dr. Vasarhelyi serves on several committees with the Canadian Arthroplasty Society and is a member of The Hip Society.
Dr. Vasarhelyi’s clinical practice is focused on primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty, with a particular interest in post-traumatic reconstruction. His research interests include musculoskeletal infections, healthcare economics and clinical issues surrounding hip and knee replacements. He is an active member of the Canadian RSA Network, serving as principal investigator on several multicentre studies, and is an investigator on grants from Canadian Institutes of Health Research, New Frontiers in Research Fund, the Department of Surgery and the Lawson Health Research Institute. He is a member of the Western University Masters of Surgery Program, having supervised 12 past and present graduate students. He is an author of 97 peer reviewed publications and 5 book chapters.
