Dr. Peter Mertens completed his education at the Faculty of Medicine, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in 1997 qualifying as a medical doctor and medical teacher. In the subsequent years he underwent postgraduate Orthopaedic training for hip and knee reconstruction. Since 2003 Dr. Mertens has worked as an orthopaedic surgeon at the zna, campus Middelheim unit for hip and knee reconstruction. He was an associate professor in Artesia, department of medical health and has a private practice in Antwerp Medical and Professional Building.
During his medical career he developed a special interest for primary total hip arthroplasties and revision surgery and is active in teaching other orthopaedic surgeons. Since 2008 Dr. Mertens is a Member of the European Expert group and has arranged and led live courses for hip and knee surgery as well as online courses for doctors and OT staff. Dr. Mertens is a member of the Belgian orthopaedic and traumatology society, hip and knee society and the European Hip Society.
Since 2013, he became head of the orthopaedic department.
