Prof. Theofilos Karachalios, MD, DSc, PhD

Prof. Th. Karachalios qualified from the Medical School of Athens University (1976-1982), he specialized in Orthopaedics and completed his MD thesis at the Orthopaedic Department of Athens University (1984-1989). He further improved his clinical and research experience at Bristol Royal Infirmary, Bristol UK (registrar, 1990-1992). He has also completed a degree (post graduate program and diploma 1992-1994) in biomechanics and bioengineering at Strathclyde University (Glasgow UK).

From 1992 up to 1998 he practised Orthopaedic Surgery, as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, at KAT NHS Hospital in Athens. In 1998 he was elected   Assistant Professor, in 2011 Professor in Orthopaedics and in 2022 Chairman at the University of Thessaly (University General Hospital of Larissa, Hellenic Republic). He practices adult hip and knee reconstructive surgery, sport injuries and late reconstruction of musculoskeletal injuries.  His main research interest is hip and knee disorders, fracture healing and bone metabolism and diseases.

He has published 163 papers in international Journals (Index Medicus) with a total impact factor of 420.5 (153 of them are shown in Pubmed). He has 5400 citations with an h-index of 36. He has written eleven chapters in books. He is the author and editor of two books entitled ‘Bone implant interface in Orthopaedic Surgery – From basic science to clinical application – Springer-Verlag” (Jan 2014) and ‘Long term outcome of total knee arthroplasty – Springer-Verlag’’ (Jul 2015). In July 2013 he was the featured author for Bone Joint Journal (former JBJS Br). He was the treasurer of the European Hip Society for 8 years and a member of the International Hip Society. He is co-Editor in Chief of Hip International. He was also the 2015 Chairman of HAOST (Greek Orthopaedic Association). In 2017, he was elected board member (treasurer) and in 2022 2nd vice president of the European Federation of Orthopaedics and Traumatology.

He spends his free time running long distances and he is a keen master scuba diver.
