Dr MacDessi is the Chairman of Orthopaedics at St George Private Hospital and Director of Research and Training at Sydney Knee Specialists. He is an Associate Professor in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of NSW and Oceania University of Medicine and specialises in arthroplasty and sports medicine surgery of the knee. His research focus is on evolving techniques in arthroplasty surgery and has extensive experience in the field of knee arthroplasty, osteotomy and ligament reconstruction.
Dr MacDessi was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in Orthopaedic Surgery in 2004 and was the Knee and Hip Reconstruction Fellow at the Hospital for Special Surgery, New York in 2005-06. He completed his Doctorate of Philosophy in Knee Surgery from the University of NSW in 2020 and received the Dean’s Award for Outstanding PhD Thesis. This important research culminated in development of the “Coronal Plane Alignment of the Knee” or CPAK Classification. Dr MacDessi’s post-doctoral research is leading a world-first, national, registry-nested randomised trial on outcomes of robotic surgery with kinematic alignment in total knee arthroplasty (RASKAL Trial). He serves on editorial boards for the Bone and Joint Journal and Arthroplasty Today and has numerous publications and editorials in the field of knee surgery.
